E538: Correcting Problems

The true test of a contractor is how they handle problems.

 

  1. Every contractor has problems from time to time
    1. We get behind on schedule
    2. We have quality issues
    3. We have budget issues
    4. It’s Okay, things happen
  2. The difference is how you handle the problems
    1. Poor contractors blame others, good contractors make small improvements, elite contractors make changes
    2. You will be remembered for how you handle your problems
    3. What is your approach – if you have a quality issue on your project what is your response?
      1. The Owner wants too much
      2. That’s construction, we will fix it on the punchlist
      3. I’m sorry, we are taking action to make immediate corrections so it doesn’t happen again
  3. Recognize problems are opportunities
    1. This is your chance to show why you are the best
    2. Take responsibility for the problems, even if they are really someone else’s problems
    3. Take corrective action and implement changes to fix and prevent the problem
