Today we talk about avoiding getting overwhelmed by all that we have to do by breaking things into smaller tasks.
This Coachcast is about breaking our tasks into smaller “bite-sized” pieces to get more accomplished and avoid getting paralyzed by overload. This one really hits home for me. Last week I hit a wall with Contracting Coach. I was looking at all the things I want to do and develop and wanted them all now. I realized that I was wasting a lot of time looking at the big picture and not starting on things because i was looking at them in chunks of work that were too big. I would look at things and say “I don’t have time to do that now because I have something else coming up in an hour.” That had me putting things off instead of doing them. I stopped, took a deep breath and started breaking the tasks into smaller chunks that I could accomplish in less time. Bam, now I’m moving forward again.

This is something that all uber-successful people understand and practice. Most of us know this but sometimes forget to put it into practice. This is just a reminder. When you look at all you need to do each day it can really get scary. We often default into doing busy work to avoid the elephant in the room. This is a bad habit and we just need to remind ourselves to make our tasks smaller.

When you look at what you need to do and get accomplished for your projects I want you to start breaking those tasks into smaller pieces that can be accomplished in 20 to 30 minutes. We can always find 20 minutes to work on something and it’s much easier then trying to figure out when you can spare 2 hours. The other advantage to breaking things down is you can take a look at the simplified tasks and see which ones you can delegate. We all need to get better at delegation and learn to spread the load so that we can work on our business not in our business.
