Developing and tracking key project metrics can help keep you on track.

  1. Key Metrics
    1. Key metrics are items that give us insight into how the project is progressing
    2. Usually a measure of productivity, financial completion or quality
    3. We often track a few but don’t get too many or they won’t be useful
  2. Should be items that take care of the rest
    1. What can you track that will let you know where everything is
      1. For example: with footings tracking LF of trench would not be a good indicator since it’s not finished
    2. Maybe it’s CY/Day – Manhours – LF – SF – Ton
    3. Pick items that can give you good indication of where you stand
  3. Use leading indicators and share with your team
    1. Avoid using metrics that take days or weeks to find answer
    2. Use something that you can tally every day or sooner if necessary
    3. Create a board to show the team where you are
      1. I like the United Way boards that use a thermometer and fill it up as they go
