It’s so hard to be successful in construction.

Really? I don’t think so.

How many of you have uttered the words above falling prey to an old paradigm? I know I have. Too many times until I shifted that thought.

  1. Useless paradigms in construction get perpetuated
    1. “New projects every time make it hard” – That’s an exciting challenge
    2. “People don’t want to pay” – sure there are bad apples – that’s everywhere – How can I do better?
    3. “Construction is hard work” – hard work doesn’t mean struggle
  2. What is “Hard Work” to you
    1. Do you call anything you don’t like hard work?
    2. Hustle and effort do not mean you need to struggle
    3. Anything worth doing takes effort and work but shouldn’t be a struggle or turn-off
  3. Do what you love
    1. I know we all have heard this and think it’s impossible – it’s not
    2. First step is to understand you and your reasons why
    3. Find your cringe points and change them
      1. I used to hate dealing with change orders with my customer – changed the process and now I love it
    4. Find what you love to do and adjust the painful things so that they fit what you love

Being successful at anything takes effort and hustle but that doesn’t mean we have to accept the struggle. Know the difference between hard work and struggle.

Take-Action Items:
